Wellington High School holds annual service day throughout community

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington High School students, grades 10-12, held their annual service day Wednesday around the community from 8 to 11 a.m. Freshmen stayed on campus to serve at school. The day was organized through Karla Defore, World History and Crusader Way Instructional Coach.(School pictures sprinkled throughout the story were taken by Wellington instructor Katie Ford.)

The places the students went to help included:

•Arrowhead Animal Clinic/Hargis Creek Clean up – eight students walked dogs, cleaned cages. After that they walked to Hargis Creek and picked up trash.

•Brookdale Senior Living — 15 students cleaned windows and spent time with residents. 

•Bus barn — Cleaning busses, sweeping the shop.

•Chamber of Commerce, Memorial Auditorium — eight students.

•Dream Garden at Worden Park — 15 students planted, spread mulch, and more.

•Kennedy Elementary — Working with students, cleaning playground.

•Eisenhower Elementary — 20 students worked with students, cleaned playground.

•Fire Department — 15 students were instructed by officer Yunker.

•Wellington Food Bank — six students stocked and organized shelves.

•Freewill Baptist Church — 20 students worked on either food pantry or working on landscaping.

•Botkin Care and Rehab – 10 students doing yard/garden project, some painting.

•Trash clean up – seven students picked up trash throughout town.

•Wellington KOA — eight students spread mulch, picked up trash.

•Lincoln Elementary — 20 students worked with students and cleaned up playground.

•Police Department – 15 students were instructed by Officer Yunker.

•Lions Club Park — 15 students painted the shelter house.

•Park Department – 10 students created a flower bed around the sign.

•Pheasants Forever – seven students created habitat.

•Public Library – eight students worked on flour beds or cleaned and helped children’s story time.

•Wellington Health and Rehab – 10 students – four helping with resident activities, six gardening. 

•Chisholm Trail Museum – 10 students cleaned, organized and mowed.

•Sumner Regional Medical Center – 15 students did various activities.

•Wellington Christian Academy – eight students worked with students.

•Wellington golf course – 25 students did various outdoor work. 

•Sellers Park – 15 students painted and trash clean up.

•Wellington Senior Center/Glass Museum — five students worked with glassware and then cleaned up flowerbed.

•Wheat Capital Manor – 12 students worked on flower bed.

•Wellington High school – 127 Freshman did various activities around the school including: making casseroles for Hospice patients; cleaning drama department; picking up trash; cleaning concession stand/library/and around WHS; painting fire/no parking zones; moving and organizing prom decorations; cleaning bleachers, wrestling room, and equipment room.
