Wellington Middle School principal Jamie Ybarra to resign at end of school year

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Long time Wellington Middle School Principal Jamie Ybarra tendered his resignation to be effective at the end of the school year.

The motion came after three executive sessions that included non-elected personnel, negotiations, and student matters at the regular February Wellington school board meeting Monday evening. Other accepted resignations include:

•Pamela Turkle, art at WMS;

•Lester Rose, science at WHS;

•Barbara White, first grade at Washington Elementary;

•Brandon Wilmoth, sixth social studies at WMS;

•Ashley DeHoff, para at Kennedy;

•Brandon Martin, para at WHS;

•Alyssa Wilson, para at Roosevelt.

The following people were hired at USD 353:

•Esther Runs, academic coach at Kennedy;

•Chelsi Strum, para at Eisenhower;

•Amanda Shinkle, para at Lincoln;

•Maurette Cooper, seventh grade math at WMS;

•Nate Cornejo, WHS assistant baseball;

•Donna Starnes, library aide at Lincoln;

•Cortney Brown, para at Kennedy.

In other business:

•The school district has applied for a reading grant that could net the Wellington school district over $300,000 if awarded. The grant will be shared in a consortium with Ark City, Winfield, and Coffeyville and must go toward reading purposes.

•USD 353 will be purchasing $150,000 of Chromebooks for next school year for Wellington High School students participating in the school redesign process. The one-on-one initiative has been implemented in the WMS ranks. Those computers will remain in the WMS and the new purchase is for computers at the high school.

•Assistant Superintendent Adam Hatfield said three bids have been taken for the district office roof. No action was taken.

•The board heard a report on a proposal for new elementary report cards which will be more in-depth in the progress of the students as defined through the redesign project.
