Wellington Noon Lions Club hold first annual Diabetes Awareness walk
Submitted to Sumner Newscow — The first annual Wellington Noon Lions Club Strides Walk for Diabetes Awareness was held at Century Park on Saturday, June 9 and it was a great success. A Strides Event is a family-friendly activity that combines fun with service. It promotes diabetes awareness and the importance of healthy exercise for people with diabetes or those at risk.
There were 78 walkers who participated in the walk, 23 of them were children. There were over 362 laps completed in total. Every lap completed equaled one ticket for the door prizes drawn at the end of the event. All door prizes were donated by local businesses.
Sumner Regional Medical Center co-sponsored the event and provided free blood sugar checks for any and all participants. Chief Nursing Officer Darlene Cooney pricked 55 willing participants, both adult and children.
Lions Club members Dustin Amberg and Larry Mangan cut up fresh watermelon and Dillons donated free bottles of water.
Dan Weaver from Milan walked the entire two hour time limit with a total of 22 laps! Three laps around Century Park equals one mile. We appreciate his support and enthusiasm!
The Club members wish to thank: Walmart, Mill Creek Lumber, Wellington Recreation Commission, RCB Bank, Bank of Commerce, Security State Bank, and Koehn Motors for donating door prizes. Thank you to Sharon Penner with the Diabetes Association for providing informational handouts. Also, a thank you to everyone who participated in the walk and we look forward to continuing the Lions Strides Walk next year!
