Wellington places 4th in Class 4A State Golf Golf Tournament – just 1 stroke from placing

Crusaders after winning the Class 4A Regional. They finished fourth at state.

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington girls’ golf team finished just one stroke from placing in the two-day Class 4A State Tournament at Emporia Municipal Golf Course yesterday afternoon.

The Crusaders overcame a slow start on day one to post the tournament’s second-highest score on day two. They would shoot a 396 on Day 1 and 370 on Day 2 for a 766 total.

Wamego ran away with the state championship, posting a 674. Winfield, the tournament’s surprise, shot 762 while Topeka Hayden scored 765. Yes, that was just four strokes between 4A’s second, third and fourth-place teams (see team scores here). Other team scores were: Pratt 811 and Tonganoxie 815.  Six teams were eliminated on Day 1: Independence 428, Augusta 431, Buhler 438, McPherson 456, Ottawa 465, and Labette Count 470.

Wellington co-head coach James Ginter had this to say about the tournament:

“Our ladies were very excited and nervous about the state as it was the first time in the history of our program that we had qualified as a team.”

He continued:

“The morning started rough with very low temperatures but we had high spirits. After a few holes we quicky realized that our first day was not going as expected. After day one, the Crusaders finished in fourth place and were behind 16 strokes to Winfield and six strokes to Topeka Hayden. Kasiah Richmond finished in the top 10.”

But things improved for the Crusaders, as four of the girls would post improved scores. Two girls had scores improved by more than double digits (see individual scores here).  Ginter states:

“The next day temperatures were freezing, but the Lady Crusaders stayed tough and played significantly better. They finished in fourth, one stroke behind Topeka Hayden and five strokes from being the state runner-ups. It was a great experience for our girls and such a successful season. We could not be more proud of the girls. They are great people and amazing teammates and friends.”

Individually, Richmond, a senior, finished 11th for the two days, scoring a 91 on both days.

Claire Ginter, a freshman, shot a 100 on day 1 and significantly improved on day 2, shooting an 86.

Taryn Viramontes, also a freshman, shot a 98 on day 1 and 94 on day 2.

Presley Cornejo, a freshman as well, shot 107 and 109 during the two days.

Aubrey Hunt, a junior, shot a 117 on day one and then did much better in day two with a 99.

Elly DeJarnett finished with 111 and 121 for the two days.

Overall, Wellington had a sensational season, winning the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. III and IV, the regional and a total of eight tournaments.

This team has a lot of youth. Perhaps they should wear shades since the future is so bright.
