Sumner Newscow report — On Wednesday, February 24 at 7 p.m. the Wellington Regent Theatre will host a free admission, a special viewing of Merchant Ivory’s film “Mr. & Mrs. Bridge” starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Filmed in Kansas City, the movie garnered Joanne Woodward a nomination for the Academy Award “Best Actress”.
Local Wellington resident, Laura Nelson Lombardi, the Kansas City casting director for the film, will share insights and antidotes prior to the theatre showing.
“I was honored to be part of this production and to have the opportunity to work with such a prestigious film-making duo and an incredible cast,” Lombardi said.
More than 2,000 extras earned $25 per day for their brush with Hollywood royalty. Lombardi was tasked with filling these roles as well as about 25 speaking parts, authentic jazz musicians, a big band singer and a genuine mayor.
On Thursday, Lombardi will be joined by fellow Kansas City crewmember, Jeff Owens. Owens was the Construction and Special Effects Coordinator on the film and responsible for making “weather” including rain, wind, tornadoes, and other picturesque features. Owens said, “I look forward to visiting Wellington and sharing some behind-the-scenes stories with everyone.”
Married in real-life on-camera couple, Paul and Joanne, portray traditional twosome, Walter and India Bridge, who are struggling to manage rebellious children in the changing world of the 1930’s and 40’s. Authentic costuming and beautiful sets bring the era to life as they navigate family, friendship, and convention.
Filmed 30 years ago, the picture was shot on location throughout Kansas City, including the Country Club Plaza. The film also features cast members Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) and Robert Sean Leonard (Dead Poet’s Society, House).
