by Bliss Baird, Wellington Swim Team correspondent — Expect Wellington swimmers to be “tatted up” in the coming weeks – with the rub-on kind, of course.

Team members have the opportunity to earn temporary tattoos by achieving personal best times, and the coupons were flying out of Coach Lyndsie Oathout’s hands at the home meet versus Haysville last Tuesday.

Wellington swimmers cut time on two-thirds of their races for a net drop of 418 seconds. That is just under seven minutes!

The biggest cut of the night came on Rogan Wetta’s 100 free.

The six year-old improved his time by a whopping 46.46 seconds! Travis Cody cut the largest sum of time. In his three individual races, 50 Free, 50 Fly, and 100 Free, Travis cut a total of one minute 17 seconds! With substantial cuts on all of their races, Averie Burns, Alec Gonzalez, and Eliesse McComb also showed major improvement, dropping totals of thirty-two, twenty-six, and twenty-four seconds, respectively.

Aidan Young even made the coaches second-guess their arithmetic when he cut 29.74 seconds on the 200 IM (give us a break – 10:45 on a summer night is not the time for mental math). Quinn McCue, Jaxson Irey, Mya Sowersby, Matt Pryce, Aurora Young, Rose Dickinson, and Marisa Black each accumulated double-digit drops on the night. Wellington’s first year swimmers made impressive improvements in just one week of practice. On the 50 Free, Aarilyn Farley cut over six seconds, Alara Wilson dropped nearly ten, and Hayden Stow and Michael Davis each cut almost twenty seconds.

Two Wellington swimmers earned new Districts times this week. Mackinze Tracy shaved 1.34 seconds to qualify in the 50 Free, and Marisa Black qualified her 50 Free as well. She, along with Emberly Gonzalez, Chance Hamel, and Jensen Lynnes, bettered their seeds at Districts with best times on previously qualified races. Jordan Thompson and Kailey Klein have also qualified.

This week’s top finishers deserve extra commendation. The Haysville team is nearly three times the size of Wellington’s, so the meet resembled five basketball players trying to score against fifteen opponents. Needless to say, Wellington did not win, but despite the odds, many Sailfish did. Here are the Wellington swimmers who scored in the top three on individual events or won relays:
