Wellington sophomore Skyler Branam named Big Cheese Athlete of the Week

Skyler Branam

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Big Cheese Athlete of the Week is Wellington sophomore Skyler Branam, who had a sensational and interesting day last Thursday.

Branam was the starting pitcher in Wellington’s 4-3 loss to Abilene in the first round of the regional baseball tournament in Rose Hill. He pitched six innings and allowed just five hits, two walks while striking out seven batters. He allowed just two earned runs in the single elimination game. But that was only part of the story. In the sixth inning, Abilene batter H. Hoekman hits a line drive straight at Branam, which hit him in the head. He went down on the mound and seems significantly hurt at the moment. But he came back to complete the game.

Then because the baseball team was eliminated, he was immediately transported to Circle for the track regional being held later that day. He was a key leg in Wellington state qualifying 4×100 relay team helping the team finish third with a 44:34 mark.

For his effort, Branam is the recipient of a large delicious Big Cheese Pizza at 324 N. Washington.
