By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — This week’s Big Cheese Athletes of the Week is the eight state qualifiers for the Wellington Cross Country team.
Last Saturday in Wamego, the Wellington girls performed as a team for the first time in their history (unless someone can prove otherwise). The girls finished 11th place. Members of the team include Taylor Earl, Caroline Mott, Wesleigh Davis, Madelyn Fullerton, Sawyer Parkey, and Arien Jones.
Luke Wylie and Rome Hunt were the two boys individual runners. Wyle was sensational running the 5K in 17:59.08 for 19th place, the first time a Wellington runners has placed since 2012. Hunt also finished 31st place.
For their effort, all eight runners receive a large, delicious Big Cheese Pizza at 324 N. Washington in Wellington.
