Wellington to battle Scott City on homecoming weekend
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Last year at the scheduling meeting, Wellington had an open date on week #5 and no opponent to play. Thus came the first ever regular season game against Scott City – which didn’t have a game either.
Now with Ulysses and Scott City, Wellington has guaranteed a trip out west every year. Luckily, Scott City comes here while Wellington travels west to Ulysses. In 2017, it will be the opposite.
The winless Crusaders are extreme underdogs going into the homecoming game. Scott City is listed in “others†in the latest Kpreps.com in Class 4A Div. 2. It also just hammered Ulysses 53-7 last week.
Scott City has a new coach in Jim Turner, who took over long-time football coach Glenn O’Neal – who spent one year as a Wellington head basketball coach in the 1990s. O’Neal is at Topeka Seaman.
Wellington will be without starting quarterback Cade Phelps who is out with a concussion.
