Wellington wins home invitiational by a lot… Taryn Viramontes ties school record

Taryn Viramontes wins the Wellington Invitational as her closest rival Anica Paulsrud of Buhler looks on.
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls’ golf team overwhelmed its competition at the home invitational held on a hot Monday afternoon.
The Crusaders bested eight other teams with a 348 score. Buhler finished second with a 374, 26 strokes behind. The other team scores were: Winfield 397, Goddard, 399, Andover Central 399, Circle 430, Andale 436, Arkansas City 447, and Mulvane 455.
Junior Tara Viramontes dominated the competition, shooting a 73, three-over par. She tied her teammate Claire Ginter with that score. She also bested Buhler’s Anika Paulsrud, who shot a 77 for second place. Ginter finished third with an 82.
“Typically, we played nine holes, but this year, we played a full 18-hole tournament,” said James Ginter, Wellington’s head golf coach. “The girls did exactly what we hoped for – and won the whole thing.”
Wellington’s Presley Cornejo shot an 87 for sixth place. Bella Angleton placed 21st for Wellington’s fourth and final team score- shooting a 106. Kenna Maxwell shot a 111, and Haley Gulick scored a 114, placing 37th and 42nd respectively.
Other Wellington golfers were Ava Bales, who tied for 44th with a 116 and Kadynce Aufdengarten, who tied for 48th with a 120.

Sign of the times. Ava Bales chips on hole #14 with a windmill blade parked to the north on U.S. 160.
The girls will not travel to McPherson’s Turkey Creek Golf Course on Thursday, Sept. 19.
