Wellington wrestlers complete wild two days of wrestling – split league double dual on Thursday

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington varsity wrestling team ended a very busy two days with the Marion Dual Tournament.  The Crusaders finished 2-3 on Friday and finished eighth as a team.

But the big wrestling evening was the night before when Wellington hosted a league double dual against Rose Hill and Mulvane. When it came to drama, it was probably as exciting of an evening of wrestling as you will find in the sport.

The wrestling evening lasted more than three hours, and after it was over all three teams finished 1-1. Wellington would lose to Rose Hill 38-33 and then come back to defeat Mulvane 36-36 after seven tie-breakers.

Mulvane and Wellington had equal number of wins, equal number of falls, equal number of unsportsmanlike penalties (none), equal number of defaults, equal number of technical falls, equal number of major decisions. Finally, on the seventh tiebreaker, Wellington won on the winning of first points, 11-10. It was as crazy figuring it out as the duals themselves. For example, if you started your match with a takedown, that is two points for the team you are representing in this tiebreaker. Wrestling officials, coaches and statisticians were gathered at the table taking almost 20 minutes figuring it all out.

“We lost to a team we should have beat, and we beat a team we should have lost to,” said Mitch McComb, Wellington head wrestling coach.

Nic Reyes was a double winner in league duals Thursday.

In the other dual, Mulvane beat Rose Hill 46-34.

So what does this mean? Each team is now 1-1 in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV and all still have Clearwater and Andale left to wrestling. The possibilities are endless.

“We need to beat Andale and Clearwater and not worry about the other teams,” McComb said.

Not only were the team scores extremely close, but the matches within were extremely competitive. For example, the first dual between Wellington-Rose Hill took more than 90 minutes to complete.

“That means there were two teams really, really battling,” McComb said.

In the Wellington-Rose Hill match there were six matches that went to the third period and the pins didn’t come instantaneously. Three pins came in the second period and one pin in the third.

In that first match, McComb said a few things didn’t break Wellington’s way. He was expecting pins in some weight ranks that were decisions for Wellington. But the big loss came at 170 when Kanden Young, who at one time was leading 7-4, would get pinned in the third period with just 12 seconds left.

However, in the nightcap, a lot of things unexpectedly went Wellington’s way. For one thing, Mulvane had one of its best wrestlers out for the evening.

Ian Groom, who normally wrestles at 195, wrestled up at 220 and won 9-6 replacing Matt McComb, who got sick. Then Logan Jones, who was in street clothes in the first match with Rose Hill, was called in to wrestle at 190 pounds. He was decisioned, but was expected to be pinned.

“It was a crazy evening,” McComb said. “In one of the matches a Mulvane wrestler pulled off a huge upset over a Rose Hill wrestler. That was 12 point swing and that was the difference in the final score.”

Here were the results of double dual. Wellington wrestlers are listed first unless default for other team.
