Wellington wrestlers embark on very busy week after returning from Saturday’s Rossville tournament
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — This will be a busy week for the Wellington High School grapplers. The girls are wrestling in the Tournament of Champions in Newton on Thursday. The boys are hosting Rose Hill in a dual Thursday before participating in the two-day Halstead Tournament on Thursday and Friday. The girls will wrestle in a tournament at Wichita West on Saturday.
The Wellington wrestling team returned to action last weekend when they traveled to Rossville for a dual on Friday and a tournament on Saturday.
The Wellington girls finished second in the Rossville Tournament, finishing behind the host. Rossville had 124, and Wellington followed with 121. Other teams scoring were: Wellsville 114, Santa Fe 111, Wamego 87, and Perry-LeCompton 46.
For the boys, Wellington placed seventh with 77 points. Wamego won the Rossville tournament with 213 points, followed by Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail 203, Effingham 202.5, Sabetha 193 and Seneca-Nemaha Central 171.
Wellington had two girls who finished with two firsts and four seconds. Bri Walker, at 135, placed first with a pin over Cassie Fund of Rossville at 5:52 in the championship finals. Aubrey Hunt won the 235-pound division by pinning four opponents en route to a championship.
At 170, Kaylee Horinek placed second, pinning her first two opponents before getting pinned by Hannah Simmers of Atchison County in the championship finals.
At 120, Isabelle Cullens also finished second after pinning two of her opponents before getting pinned by Kendra Hurla of Rossville in the championship finals.
At 110, Aubri Rohrer secured second with three pins, before getting pinned by Holly Thatcher of Oskaloosa.
At 105, Deighlynn Lea placed second, going 2-1 for the day. She lost to Maliyah Lopez of Burlingame in :38.
Other Wellington participating included Ellie Franke placing sixth at 115, Sophie Parkey not placing, Mikayla Ybarra finishing third, and Maya Cornejo getting fourth.

In the boys, Talan Cantrell at 204 finished third for Wellington’s highest placer for the boys at the Rossville Tournament. He pinned four of his five opponents including Isaac Hayes of Oskaloosa at 1:44 for the third-place match.
Derrick Lowe placed fourth at 285. He went 2-1 before succumbing to Holden Bass of Seneca- Nemaha Central in the third-place match.
Cable Bogguss placed fourth at 106, going 4-1 in his first five matches before losing to Caleb Renyer of Sabetha 2-0 in the third-place match.
Other Wellington wrestlers participating in Rossville included: Will Weber at 132, Krystian Devine at 138, Axl Norris at 144, Taylen Ramirez at 150, Hank Shinliver at 157, Cayson Ramirez at 165, and Jamar Armstrong at 190.
