Wellington wrestlers have momentum going into Christmas break

Austin Shoemann has best Wellington record at 10-6 thus far this season.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — For the first time during his tenure as Wellington head wrestling coach, Mitch McComb has 30 grapplers in the WHS practice facility – the largest number in years.

But what McComb doesn’t have is that slam dunk athlete who appears to be destined for the Class 4A State Tournament qualifier next February in Salina. christmas-crusader-report

Wellington’s squad is young. In its first month, the Crusader program has had up to four freshmen in the varsity starting lineup and five sophomores and 10 freshmen overall making up  50 percent of the roster.

But he has just four seniors, and none of them have significant varsity experience. Of those four, only two are starting.

Wellington also has 11 juniors with eight of them starting.

Kyle Clem

Kyle Clem, a transfer from Clearwater, goes 6-1 over the weekend.

Going into Christmas break, the Wellington varsity record thus far has been mixed. The Crusaders are currently 4-4 in dual competition. In overall competition including bracketed tournaments, Wellington has eight starters with winning records. But all of them have at least four losses or more.

Still, things are looking up. After splitting a double dual with Rose Hill Thursday, Wellington went 3-2 in the Marion Tournament. Two of those starters appear to be catching fire.

Kyle Clem, a junior and a transfer out of Clearwater, had an exceptional weekend in the 132 pound weight division. He went 6-1 over the two-day stretch. He swept both of his opponents in a double dual with Rose Hill and Augusta. He then went 4-1 in Marion. (See Wellington wrestling photo gallery here).

Before this weekened, Clem started out slowly going 1-6 in the Pratt dual and Wellington Tournament. But now he is making up ground and heads into 2017 with momentum.

Aaron Schoemann, at 182, is another wrestlers who has been momentum on his side. He is the first Crusader wrestler to post a double digit win total with a 10-6 record. After splitting in Rose Hill, Schoemann went 5-0 in Marion to win his weight division.

Currently, Wellington has a roster with a wrestler for every weight division. A freshman left the program at 170 pounds, so that weight division is now up for grabs.

Ian Groom is a returning starter.
