Wellington wrestlers have tough evening with Mulvane

Anna Cullens had her hands full against Mulvane freshman Leiannah Landreth.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It was a tough evening for the Wellington wrestling program when Mulvane came to town. The first dual saw Mulvane’s boys destroy Wellington 72-6. The Crusader girls won 36-12, but in dual actually wrestled Wellington went 0-2.

The biggest upset came at 109 pounds where No. 1 ranked Anna Cullens was upset by Lelannah Landreth by pin in the second period.

How improbable was it? Cullens was leading 7-2 after one period and was leading comfortably 9-4 when Landreth rolled Cullens on her back and pinned her in a matter of seconds. The move seemed to surprise everyone including Cullens herself. Going into the match, Cullens had only lost three varsity matches during her freshman and sophomore careers.

The loss was so stunning that senior Kaitlyn Hain went into the hallway to console her and missed her call in to secure the forfeit win at 138.

Wellington head coach Mitch McComb was not too concerned about Cullens loss.

“I’m just glad she got in a full match,” McComb said. “She should see her again on Saturday in the tournament.”

When asked about Landreth, a freshman at Mulvane, McComb responded: “I don’t really know the girl or anything about her. But that was a good win for her.”

Mulvane brought only two girl wrestlers to the dual.

This just wasn’t Wellington’s evening that saw only victories in the junior varsity ranks.

Wellington’s lone victory in the varsity boys was Hagen Wright’s forfeit win at 285.

Jamar Armstrong battled Mulvane’s Jackson Shields into second period.

In competitive matches, Wellington was blanked. The best match of the night for Wellington was when Jamar Armstrong held his own at 182 pounds into the second period before getting pinned by Jackson Shields.

The Wellington wrestling tournament will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m.
