by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington got two wrestlers into the Class 4A state tournament on Feb. 22-23 in Salina.

Wellington senior Jason Haydon will return to the state tournament at 160 pounds, and Taylan Lamkin, a junior, advances at 195 after the two day Class 4A Regional in Augusta Friday and today.

Both boys will go into the state tournament as a fourth seed.

The Crusaders were eliminated elsewhere during a rather rough two days for the team at the regional which also included Andale, Augusta, Buhler, Clearwater, El Dorado, Hesston, Hugoton, Mulvane, Nickerson, Pratt, Rose Hill, Towanda-Circle, Ulysses and Winfield.

As of Saturday evening, Wellington was in 10th place with 38 points. That could change as there are no Crusaders in the championship finals being held tonight.

Haydon will return to the state tournament for a third consecutive year. The senior has been fighting a shoulder injury all season. But he wrestled twice, enough to get himself qualified. After receiving a bye, he decisioned Caleb Wallsmith of El Dorado 11-7. After injury defaulting, he then qualified for state with a 7-4 victory over Chase Miller of Mulvane to get into the consolation finals. He would injury default in the third-place match at 160.

Taylan Lamkin place fourth after receiving a bye in the first round. He then was pinned by Derrick Gates of Andale 1:44. After getting a bye, Lamkin pinned Colby Willis of Augusta 3:58. And then in the qualifying round, Lamkin pinned Manny Martinez of El Dorado at 1:35. He finished the night getting pinned by Diego Maravilla of Ulysses 1:18.
