by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Taylan Lamkin, a 195 pound wrestler for Wellington, finished as a sixth place state placer at the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament in Salina.

The Wellington junior completed a very busy Saturday, going 2-2 for the day, after splitting the first day matches at 1-1. He would finish 3-3 for the two days, scoring Wellington all of its eight points in the tournament. He finished the 2013-14 year with a 27-22 record.

This morning, Lamkin opened with a 6-1 decision victory over Bradley Campbell of Hugoton, his second consecutive victory of the tournament. That thrust him into the consolation quarterfinals with an opportunity to qualify as a state placer, the first Wellington wrestler to do so since Dray Meridith did it in 2010. 

Lamkin would pin Cody Howell of Chanute at the 3:34 mark of the match. That placed Lamkin in a tough rematch with Derrick Gates of Andale, who had won the 4A Regional in Augusta. Gates had pinned Lamkin at 1:44 in the first round of the Augusta Regional a week earlier. This time around, though, Lamkin was a much more tenacious opponent. Lamkin was down 6-3 late in the third when Gates finally pinned the huge underdog at the 4:28 of the match.

That sent Lamkin to the fifth place match. He would fall to John Metcalf of Fort Scott 2-1 to finish sixth for the day.

Lamkin was one of two Wellington wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament held Friday and Saturday. Jason Haydon was eliminated Friday – losing in two matches. See story here. 

For Lamkin it has been a remarkable run. As stated before, he opened his post season losing to Gates, but he came back and pinned Colby Willis of Augusta at the 3:58 mark – a wrestler he lost to during the regular season. He would then pin Manny Martinez of El Dorado at the 1:35 mark to qualify for state. He finished the night in regional getting pinned by Diego Maravilla of Ulysses 1:18.

Interestingly, Lamkin pinned Howell who had eliminated Maravilla 3-1 in the previous round… One never knows in these state tournaments.

Because of Lamkin’s run, Wellington placed 39th place. Holton won Class 4A with 104.5 points.
