WHS head golf coach James Ginter named Kansas FCA coach of the year
Sumner Newscow report — Wellington High School Head Golf Coach James Ginter was named the Kansas Fellow of Christian Athlete coach of the year.
The announcement was made during the FCA’s Spring Legacy Dinner held recently.
It has been quite a year for Ginter, who is less than one year from winning a Class 4A Boys State Golf Tournament Championship. He is also two years away from watching his daughter Payton Ginter win the individual Class 4A girls golf championship in 2020.
Ginter coached volleyball 12 years, basketball for 15 years and golf for 25 years. Ginter was named Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League as the WHS head boys golf coach six times. He was also named Kansas Golf Association high school coach of the year and the National Federation of High School State Association Kansas Golf Coach of the year.
Ginter was invited to his first FCA huddle as a high school student. It impacted him in such a profound way that he would then start his first FCA huddle in Wellington as a first-year coach years later. That was 25 years ago.
“He has been changing lives and leading students and athletes to Christ through FCA,” the FCA video states. “He has made a major impact in Wellington, Sumner County and the State of Kansas.”
Ginter states:
“I would say FCA has had an enomrous impact on the lives of both student athletes as well as students through Wellington High School. A number of my students have been huddle leaders at conferences. They’ve moved on to college and become involved in churches and universities. One of my former students is a youth director at a local church. FCA has definitely impacted the lives of our young people for Christ.”
He continues:
“If I were interested in visiting with a coach, I would say starting a FCA organization would be the best thing that they ever did in their lives. The lifelong relationships I have built with students, hundreds of them, who have gone on to have families of their own. That was built around our relationship with Christ and relationship we built through FCA.”
