Sumner Newscow report — Ethan Brungardt finished his highly successful four-year career for Wellington, finishing in 28th place in the Class 4A State Boys Golf Tournament in Hesston, Wednesday afternoon.
The Wellington senior finished four strokes from medalling. He shot a 79 on Day 2, after qualifying with an 80 on Day 1. For the 36 holes, Brungardt shot a 159.
“Ethan was participating in his fourth state championship,” said James Ginter, Wellington head high school golf coach. “He was very consistent on both days, placing him just four strokes out of the top 20.”
Ginter continues:
“Unfortunately for WHS golf, this caps off a very successful career for Ethan. He is one of a select group of men and women who have competed at the state tournament all four years of their high school career. He was also able to medal as an individual in 2025. We thank Ethan for his dedication to WHS golf and wish him all the best in the future.”
There was a two-way tie for first place. Regan Kueker of Wamego and Ethan Small of Independence both shot a 138 to win the tournament. The top 20 included everyone shooting a 155 or better. Ben Engle of Bishop Miege was the last person to medal, with a 155 (see full scores here)
Wamego won the state championship, shooting a 578, 20 strokes better than Bishop Miege, which finished second with a 598.
