Georgia Gulick wins the home Wellington Invitational.
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow – The Wellington girls golf team dominated its home invite that was cut from 18 to nine holes because of the intense heat.
With temperatures back in 95-plus territory, Wellington dominated the competition with a team score of 174, beating second-place McPherson at 202. The other team results were: Rose Hill 219, Andale 223, Wellington A 223, and Buhler 223. Winfield did not have enough players for a team score.
Four Wellington girls finish in the top five.
The Crusaders also had four of the top five golfers and six of the top eight individually.
Wellington golfer Georgia Gulick won the tournament with a 40, for five over par. She defeated Hannah Reeves of Rose Hill with a 41.

As we continue looking beyond roads, bridges, waterlines and broadband, it is time to talk about the infrastructure built not from concrete or steel, but from people, the civic organizations and volunteer networks that quietly hold our communities together.
Fifty years ago, belonging to a local organization was simply part of community life. People joined the Lions Club, Jaycees, Kiwanis, the Grange, women’s clubs, veterans’ auxiliaries, church groups and local lodges. They met regularly, raised money and took responsibility for getting things done.
Sumner Newscow report — The latest Kansas Media Rankings are out for high school football this week. Wellington is ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, up from No. 9 last week, after its big 33-13 victory over Collegiate last weekend.
Buhler is ranked No. 6, and Mulvane is ranked No. 10. Both are future opponents. Rose Hill is listed in “others.” Andale is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. The Indians come to town on Friday. Wellington has a tough schedule ahead, to say the least.
South Sumner County is tied for seventh in Class 8-man 1, after being unranked the week before. The full Kansas rankings can be found here.

On Thursday, September 10, the Wellington Police Department, with assistance from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Sumner Kansas SWAT team, executed a drug search warrant in the 400 block of East 4th Street.
During this search, Officers discovered suspected methamphetamine, Fentanyl, marijuana, and prescription drugs, as well as seized one firearm. Wellington Officers are currently preparing police reports for submission to the Sumner County Attorney’s Office for recommendation of criminal charges.
