Wellington tennis team wins the home season-opening tournament and beats the heat
Sumner Newscow report — It was opening day for three Wellington high school sports teams. One of those was the Wellington tennis team, which won its opening five-team round-robin event at Sellers Park before the massive heat took over.
Wellington scored 28 points as a team, eking out a victory over Goddard Eisenhower with 26. Conway Springs finished third with a 25, and Buhler had 9. Independent, not to be confused with 4A power Independence, had 2.
The tournament was played in the morning this year, as officials hoped to beat the heat. But one hour into the contest, it was already pushing 90 degrees.
Wellington sisters Addi Thomson and Gracie Thomson powered the No. 1 doubles side with four wins, which placed them in 1st place overall.
“The pair got better as the day went on after some first match jitters,” said Brian Aufdengarten, Wellington head girls coach.
No. 2 doubles Kenzie Schenelle and Sienna Goodrum finished second overall, going 2-1, with their only loss coming against Conway Springs duo Chloe Allen and Paige Rusco.
