By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The only thing that might have been hotter than the temperature was the Wellington Crusader football team Friday night.

The Crusaders buried Clearwater 48-7 to open the 2026 campaign. And Wellington did that in a 24-minute time span. Up until the 7:45-minute mark of the second quarter, Clearwater was leading 7-0. Wellington was facing a fourth-and-2 at its own 36.

Crusader quarterback Colton Elmore took off up the middle in a massive sea of humanity. And then came out of it on the other side untouched and scampered 36 yards for the score. The game was tied, but the momentum had shifted.

Wellington would go on to score six more touchdowns that ended with a 50-yard pick-six interception by freshman Cooper Norris with 7 minutes to play. The defense never gave up another touchdown the rest of the way.
