The 2026 Wellington High School Duchess candidates.

Sumner Newscow report — Five Wellington High School seniors were announced as 2026 Duchess candidates this afternoon, the first official act of the Wellington High School homecoming.

The homecoming is scheduled for Sept. 21 – Sept. 25, culminating with the El Dorado-Wellington football game.

From left to right in the picture above are Addy Wilson, Dru Zeka, Ellie Hays, Evie Ewing and Kirstyn Gregory, who were announced as the candidates over the school P.A. system earlier today. The ceremony and crowning of the Duchess will be at halftime of the football game.

This year’s theme will be “Land of the Free, Home of the HOCO.” The festivities kick off on Monday, Sept. 21 with daily themed spirit days, interactive student assemblies, and a community-wide parade leading up to the big game.

2026 Homecoming Schedule of Events:

Adam Nusz, 89, Wellington: April 24, 1937 – Sept. 1, 2026

Adam Nusz

Adam J Nusz, age 89, died on Sept. 1, at his home. Born on April 24, 1937, in Fairview, Okla., Adam was the 11th of 12 children born to John and Sarah Nusz. Adam spent the majority of his life in Wellington, where he was a well-respected member of the farming community. His life was deeply rooted in the land and the people he served, working tirelessly for 35 years in custom harvesting and as a farmer from age 14 up until he passed away. His love for his work was admirable, and he was held in high regard by the many hands who worked with him over the years, many of whom would continue to call him for a chat years after working together.

Adam left school after eighth grade to farm on his own. He returned to his education two years later and continued farming throughout his high school years in Conway Springs, where he graduated. Adam was drafted into the Army on March 22, 1960, and was honorably discharged on April 25, 1962. While continuing to farm, he became a custom harvester, traveling to California and then making his way all the way to Montana. When he stopped working as a custom harvester, he started hauling cotton modules, mainly in Texas. Despite the demanding work, Adam always made time for his family. He married in November 1969 and shared 56 wonderful years with his wife, Arlene.

Sumner County preview: Conway Springs looks to bounce back, South Sumner is back in 8-man… more

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Here’s a look at the weekend ahead for outer Sumner County football teams. Remember, the games involving Argonia-Attica, South Sumner and Belle Plaine have been moved back an hour to start at 8 p.m.

Douglass at Conway Springs, 7 p.m.

Conway Springs had a rough season last year, suffering its first losing season in 30 years, going 3-6. But despite all the problems the Cardinals had last year, they were pretty impressive down the stretch, losing to a very good Inman team 14-13 in the first round of the playoffs.

The Cardinals return 17 lettermen this season, seven on offense and five on defense, and have 35 players out. Conway Springs head coach Matt Biehler, who is in his 18th season, said this year’s squad will have enough depth to return to what the program is known for: controlling the line of scrimmage and being a physical, power-running team.

Wellington opens with volleyball sweep against El Dorado, Clearwater

Addy Wilson vs. Clearwater.

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington volleyball team opened the 2026 campaign with a sweep against Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV foes El Dorado and Clearwater at Crusader Gymnasium.

The Wellington varsity defeated El Dorado 25-20, 25-21 in the season opener, before demolishing Clearwater 25-12, 25-19 in the nightcap. The junior varsity teams were also victorious, defeating El Dorado 16-25, 25-23, 15-13, and Clearwater 20-25, 25-20, 15-10.

El Dorado defeated Clearwater 23-25, 25-16, 25-19 in the other varsity match in Wellington.

These were victories the Crusaders needed to have if they were going to compete for a league title. And victories were what they got. Wellington was clearly the dominant team Tuesday evening, leading throughout both matches and giving up the lead only briefly. Crusaders’ victory was only in doubt in the second set of the El Dorado contest, when the Wildcats built a 21-20 lead before the Crusaders finished with a five-point run.

Lola Zeka (16) and Mikayla Viramotes (2) defend the net.

Wellington’s first set with Clearwater was a “don’t blink because you might miss it” type of contest with senior Dru Zeka rattling off 12 straight serves at one point.

Wellington head coach Kaylie Lagasse was happy with the win but felt her girls have some significant improvement ahead, especially in serving and passing.

Snickerdoodle is the Wellington Humane Society Pet of the Week

Sumner Newscow report — Snickerdoodle is a 3½-year-old, 53-pound mixed breed who is one seriously good boy! He is great with kids, loves going on adventures, and does wonderfully on car rides. Although… he does seem to think the driver’s seat belongs to him!

He’s been lucky enough to go on several outings, and every time, Snickerdoodle shows WHS officials what a fun, happy, easygoing guy he can be. He is ready to trade his shelter kennel for a family, a couch, and someone to love him forever. And whatever you do… DON’T mention his eyebrows. He’s sensitive about the whole situation.
