2019 Wellington Memorial Day service recognizes the fallen

Wellington boy scouts at the Memorial Day Service raising and lowering the flag.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Memorial Day is a day of reflection, of remembrance, and of renewed hope. And on a sunny Monday morning, Sumner County residents congregated at Prairie Lawn Cemetery remembering now only those who served in the military but served us in everyday life.

It was a little soggy this year because of the rain. But the sun shined through on Monday morning.

Old Glory flew proudly over the Memorial Day Service. The flag was one of more than 1,200 flags that flew at Wellington’s Prairie Lawn Cemetery.

The featured speaker was Jack Potucek, Lt. Col. (retired) U.S. Air Force during the service. The Wellington Boys and Girls Scouts raised and lowered the flag. Melanie Cox played the National Anthem and Taps on the trumpet.

Here are the pictures of the day. For more photos click here.

Again this year, there were more than 1,256 flags.

The gun salute capped off another moving service.

Melanie Cox again performed at the Memorial Day Service.
