Sumner Newscow report — Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath has confirmed there has been a shooting at the 1300 block North A Steet in Wellington today, a block south and west of the Ascension Via Christi Emergency Department, formerly known as Sumner Regional Medical Center.

On Monday, July 3 at about 1:30 p.m., Wellington officers responded to the reported shooting. Upon arrival, an officer discovered that a 25-year-old Wellington woman had suffered a single gun shot wound to the upper chest. Wellington EMS responded to the scene and subsequently transported the female to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. She later passed away from her injuries, according to Heath.

A 24-year-old Wellington male was taken into custody at the scene and later booked into the Sumner County Jail. Charges are pending.

Heath did not release the name of the victim until family members were notified. He said the suspect would be named pending possible charges by Sumner County Attorney Larry Marczynski, probably not until after the July 4 holiday.
