Caldwell, Oxford lose in semifinals in SCBL Tournament
by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — Oxford and Caldwell boys both lost Friday night in the semifinals of the SCBL tournament at Cowley College in Arkansas City. West Elk and Sedan will meet boy the boys championship tonight at 8. On the girls side, South Haven will play West Elk starting at 6:30.
West Elk 61, Oxford 24
West Elk put on a shooting exhibition and rained down three-pointers to pull away from Oxford in the second quarter. A minute into the second half West Elk had nine three-pointers and a 25-point lead,
and cruised from there for the win.
Oxford stuck with West Elk for the first quarter, and trailed by six after one stanza. West Elk scored 10 unanswered points to start the second quarter and Oxford never recovered.
West Elk’s Cade Miller had seven three-ponters, six in the first half. He was seven of nine from three-point land and 9-12 from the field overall. Miller finished with 35 points. Karsten Walker had 11 and Andrew Hurt had 10 for West Elk.

Oxford’s Camren Clements had nine points. Henry Carter had six, all in the first quarter.
West Elk scored 13 unanswered points in the third quarter and led 53-17. From there they slowed the game down and worked the clock. Oxford did not score in the fourth quarter and west Elk scored four points.
Sedan 45, Caldwell 37
Sedan jumped out to an early lead and Caldwell never recovered, but the game remained relatively close throughout. Caldwell made some runs but could never get over the hump.
Sedan scored the first eight points of the game, and led 14-2 late in the opening quarter. Caldwell managed five points and cut the deficit to 16-7 after one period.
The teams worked patiently for a shot in the second quarter, and both teams missed a lot of shots, but Sedan led 22-12 at the half.
Caldwell started the third quarter with two quick baskets, and later in the quarter reeled off six straight points to cut the deficit to six. Caldwell then had two possessions come up empty and got no closer.
Caldwell had no answer for Sedan’s 6-6 center Kiefer Brewer and 6-4 forward Kyler Walker. Brewer dominated the boards and finished the game with 23 point. Walker had 13.
Caldwell had some opportunities in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit as Sedan missed free throws and Caldwell got rebounds but could not convert a shot.
Corbin Rice had eight for Caldwell. Jalen Risley and Dru Volavka each had seven. Jaryn Halling had five for the Blue Jays.
