1. WHS tracking

Wellington head track coach Zane Aguilar said at Crusader Club today that there are about 70 athletes out this year and nobody has quit.

“We usually have at least 10 quit by this time,” Aguilar said. “But this just illustrates the caliber of people who are coming through WHS at the moment.”

Wellington hasn’t always had a lot of success in track the past two years, but this year’s squad is promising. The girls were recent winners at the Belle Plaine Invitational while the boys finished second.

The girls have been especially buoyed by the success of two girls in particular: Taylor Meyer in the javelin and Taylor McGlothlin in the 200, 400, and triple jump.

Both girls recently participated in the K.T. Woodman Pre-State Track Meet held at Wichita State University. Meyer had a great day finishing in the top eight and was just one foot short of getting to participate in the “elite” competition. Her personal record of 122-00 is the seventh best in the state in Class 4A.

McGlothlin, a senior, is on an even higher plane. At the moment, she currently has the fasted time in both the 200 and 400 meters in Class 4A. Her 59.52 time in the 400 is the best in Wellington since the early 1980s. She is currently running the 200 in 26.55. Her triple jump is also impressive where she is also on the state leader board with a leap of 35-07.75.

“She is quite the athlete,” Aguilar said. “She didn’t even go out for track last year.”

The girls scored 126 points in Belle Plaine with Mackenzie Heacock also winning in the 1600 meter run, and Elise Legrand in the pole vault and 100 hurdles.

On the boys side, Aguilar said he has sprinters. De’Andre Washington, who is doubling up in both baseball and track, swept both the 100 and 200 meter events in Belle Plaine.

Wellington will be hosting the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Div. IV meet on May 11 in its new glistening track facility at the middle school. Andale, Clearwater, Mulvane and Rose Hill will be the opponents.

The Class 4A Regional will be in Andale, and will be the toughest in the state, Aguilar said with the likes of Andale, Andover Central, Buhler and others participating.

2. New tennis era

Chad Whaley is in his first year as the head boys tennis coach. Coincidentally, he also has a young team.

With 15 players out this, the starting lineup is a new one in 2018. Hunter Bryant, only a sophomore, is performing at No. 1 singles this fall.

At No. 1 singles is James Hinman.

At No. 1 doubles, Jaden Adams and Kade Adams are playing together as brothers. They are following in their sisters footsteps. Madi and MeKenna Adams were once tennis partners.

Avery Rademacher and Jared Oathout are the other two, making up the doubles No. 2 team.

3. Ranked No. 1 in the state

The Oxford baseball team went from No. 3 to No. 1 in the latest Kansas Baseball Coaches Association poll released on Thursday.

The Wildcats were behind Pittsburg-Colgan and Leon Bluestem, but both teams sunk this past week in the poll. The latest poll, released on Thursday, is as follows:

1. Oxford

2. Medicine Lodge

3. Moscow

4. Little River

5. Uniontown

6. Spearville

7. Ellis

8. K.C. Christian

9. Yates Center

10. Leon-Bluestem.

“It’s always nice to see our program and kids recognized,” said Kyle Green, Oxford head baseball coach. “This bunch of kids have worked their tail ends off the past four years and this is a culmination of that hard work. I’m proud of this bunch.”

4. WHS athletic banquet

The 2018 All Sports Banquet is being held May 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the WHS auditorium. All sports teams from the fall to the spring will be recognized. Coaches will award letters and awards for their players.  The outstanding male/female senior athletes will then be announced.  Crusader Club will be providing a hamburger or hot dog for each eligible person.

Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. However, parents are asked to bring food items:
