(Updated) One man confirmed dead after being hit by train near Belle Plaine

(updated Friday, 11 a.m.) by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A 27-year-old man was killed late Thursday evening after getting hit by a train west of Belle Plaine,  the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed.

According to a Sheriff spokesman Mike Westmoreland, the collision was reported on east 90th North and north Hillside, just west of Belle Plaine. The man had allegedly stepped in front of a southbound Burlington Northern- Santa Fe train at around 5:4o p.m. The train was going 55 mph at the time, Westmoreland said.

The name of the victim is not being released by the Sheriff’s office until all family members have been notified.

The investigation is ongoing.
