Weather last night

A swath of quarter-sized hail was reported in the northern part of the county. There was some reported damage including a few uprooted trees.

Here are the rain totals as reported on the area Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, Snow Network.

The weather tonight

According to the National Weather Service, there is a threat of severe storms arriving late this afternoon into the evening. Possible baseball-sized hail, 70 mph wind gusts, and tornadoes, especially west of 1-135…  Or maybe not.

April totals

The following is weather data collected by the National Weather Service for Wellington. We received 2.41 inches of rain in April, which is slightly below the average of 3.00 inches for the month. Also, the month was warmer than usual, at 60 degrees up from the normal 55.4 degrees. We hit a high of 95 degrees on April 15, the day we were finishing our taxes. Ten days earlier, we were wearing coats with 34-degree lows.

Drought Monitor

The rain needs to keep coming. According to the latest drought figures, Sumner County is somewhere between a moderate drought on the northeast end and a more severe drought on the southeast end.

That is better than last year when we were at the exceptional drought.
