Argonia and South Haven girls continue to roll with huge home semifinal wins Monday night
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Two Sumner County girls’ teams qualified for the sub-state championship with semifinal home victories on Monday. Argonia annihilated Minneola 60-28. The South Haven girls defeated Central-Burden 49-20.
Both teams are one game away from the state. Argonia will travel to the Caldwell Sub-state Championship, where it will play Ingalls on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. A win there and Argonia is headed to the Class 1A-Div. II state tournament, site to be determined.
South Haven is headed to the Madison Sub-State Championship, where it battle No. 1 Little River at 6:30 p.m. A win there and they are headed to the Class 1A-Div. 1 state tournament. Again, the site will be determined later.
The Red Raiders dominated Minneola, a school directly south of Dodge City. Red Raiders’ senior Tori Morrison scored 22 points, while senior girls Kara Jones had 19, and Autumn Coleman 11. Lindsay Coleman was not in the lineup because of a knee injury.
Argonia took a 13-2 first-quarter lead and was coasting by halftime, 30-11, en route to the easy semifinal win.
Argonia basketball coach Morgan Grippen states:
“It’s always exciting to get a postseason win and even more to get a chance to go to State. I think the girls are focused on the game ahead and ready to give it their all. With an injury to Lindsay Coleman who leads us in numerous categories, we needed to move girls around and they stepped up in her place. Tori Morrison, Autumn Coleman and Kara Jones had huge nights for us and Bailey Haines was a force on defense and rebounds.”
Argonia shot 21-of-50 from the field for a 42 percent success rate. The Red Raiders shot 27 three-point attempts, making 10 of them for 37 percent. Jones led the team with five.
South Haven lost to Central on Feb. 13, 38-34. On Monday, the Cardinals made sure it didn’t happen again.
The Cardinals opened with a 17-2 first-quarter lead and were up 30-8 at the half. South Haven outshot Central 13-6 in the third quarter en route to victory.
South Haven’s Addison Heater scored 20 points. Other scorers were Adayln Irey with 10, Addison Heater 6, Adele Helsel 5, Avery Strickland 4, Kelly Theurer 2, Annabelle Burden 1, Xava Wiens 1.
