Class 4A State Wrestling Day 1 updates… Maddie Fullerton reaches state finals

Maddie Fullerton at 130 pounds has become the first state finalist from Wellington since Aubrey Hunt two years ago. She pins Morgan Pinkering of Santa Fe Trail at 3:12 in the second period. After a scoreless first period, Fullerton used a reversal and a four-point near fall before securing the pin. She will now wrestle Addilyn Wacker of Iola for the state championship on Saturday.
Consolation Round one — Wellington went 1-3 in the first round. Freshman Meryn Metzen kept her incredible season alive a pin over Haylee King of Baldwin. This was a good win as she and King were knotted at 3-all before she scored a takedown and pin. She will wrestle Leila Schoonmaker of Marysville in the next round. Aubri Rohrer at 105, Georgia Shinliver at 140 and Caydence Taylor at 155 ended their impressive season with losses.
I’m hitting the road back to Wellington. I’ll update tonight. Madi Fullerton is still in contention for a state title at 130 pounds. She will meet Morgan Pickering of Santa Fe Trail tonight in the championship semifinals. Go, Madi!
Cayson Ramirez at 190, was defeated in the consolation second round getting pinned at the 3:38 mark to Jude Krentz of Topeka Hayden. Ramirez came into this match as a No. 7 seed to Krentz as a No. 2 seed. He will now wrestle in the Consolation Round 2 against the winner of the Consolation Round #1 match-up.
Mikayla Ybarra at 145 was pinned by Shaelynn Small of Paola in the championship second round match, getting pinned at 1:59, right before the first period ended. Ybarra was the No. 3 seed, losing to Smail of Paola. She will now wrestle on the consolation side awaiting the first round winner.
Madi Fullerton, at 130 pounds, has reached the Championship semifinals with a sensational pin over Dannee Anderson of Independence just 52 seconds into the match. Fullerton will meet Morgan Pickering of Santa Fe Trail tonight in the championship semifinals.
London Pourner at 100 was pinned in her quarterfinal match after scoring an upset in the first round. She was pinned by Peyton Brazzle of Wamego at 2:17 after falling behind 6-0 in the first period. Brazzle was the No. 2 seed at 100. Pourner now battles the consolation round 1 winner.
Ramirez at 190, Wellington’s lone boys wresler opened the tournament with a 13-3 major decision victory over Brodie Stoughton of Fort Scott. Ramirez took a 4-1 first-period lead and scored two takedowns thereafter. He will now battle Jude Krentz of Topeka Hayden in the championship second round.
Wellington is currently 4-3 for the day.
Caydence Taylor at 155 was pinned by Leonlyn Kartnowski of Wamego :54 in the first round. She is now in the consolation bracket.
\Mikayla Ybarra at 145 got a pin at 3:43, just seconds before she almost got pinned herself in her first-round match. Her opponent, Olivia Bulter of Tonganoxie, had her in a headlock on a takedown when she was able to reverse her for the pin.
Ybarra has moved into the second round, where she will battle Shaelynn Small of Paola.
Georgia Shinliver at 140 was pinned by Jade Willard of Paola at 1:21 in the first round. She will now wrestle Kennedy Smith of Holton on the consolation side of the bracket.
Meryn Metzen at 110 was pinned by Nevaeh Betty of Wamego at 1:03 in the first round. She will battler Haylee King of Baldwin in the consolation bracket first round.
London Pourner at 100 started the tournament with a bang, defeating Riley Crookham of Tonganoxie 18-2 with a technical fall. This was a bit of a surprise, as Crookham is the No. 7 seed and Pourner was No. 10. Crookham was also ranked No. 3 in the state in the KWCA poll at 100 going in.
