Crusader preview: Mulvane heavily favored to win ninth straight over Wellington
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Anniversaries are usually fun to celebrate. But this one is something that Wellington would soon forget.
This is the 10th anniversary of Mulvane’s winning streak over Wellington in football, not including the loss of the casino.
Mulvane would beat Wellington 21-17 in 2006 and the Crusaders haven’t beaten the Cats since. There has been plenty of drama in those 10 years. The two teams did not meet one another in 2008 and 2009, but Mulvane is currently on an eight-game winning streak against the Crusaders.
There is little doubt that the streak will continue tomorrow night in Mulvane. The Wildcat program is hitting on all cylinders. Mulvane is 5-2, having lost to Andale in a 61-52 shootout, and a Maize South team by three points.
Last weekend, the Wildcats defeated Ulysses 28-14, taking a 28-7 lead into the fourth quarter and outdistancing Ulysses 312-216 in total yards.
The Wildcats have actually given up more yards defensively than Wellington this year, placing them sixth out of seven. They have given up 324.3 yards a game. Wellington has 306 yards per game.
But on offense, Mulvane is a scoring machine, having accumulated 2,799 yards for 399.9 yards per game.
Jayden Price is a one-man wrecking crew in the backfield. He has thrown for 886 yards and nine touchdowns. But his best work is rushing where he leads the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Div. IV with 1,147 yards, and 18 touchdowns. Price, only a junior, has 18 touchdowns and has cumulated 118 points as the league’s leading scorer.
Wellington, fresh off its heartbreaking 21-20 loss against Winfield is facing its first winless season in its history.
This one will undoubtedly be a tough one.
