Electricity outage due to squirrel

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The city of Wellington had a power outage this morning about 10:30 a.m. caused by a squirrel getting caught in a transformer at an electric sub-station.

“It happens ever so often,” said Wellington City Manager Gus Collins. “We have cages and other preventive maintenance measures to keep the squirrels out, but ever so often one of those guys still get in there.”

The outage lasted for 13 minutes throughout the town until the gas turbine was turned on. Collins said the city electric workers are busy getting the city back connected with Westar Energy.
