Former WHS coach Linn Hibbs announces retirement from Winfield
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — An end of a coaching era has just occurred.
Former Wellington head coach Linn Hibbs has announced his retirement as the Winfield High School football coach.
The announcement was made via social media on his oldest daughter Lacey Hibbs’ Facebook page. He states:
“I have made the decision to retire at the end of this school year. I’m incredible thankful to have been in teaching and coaching for 34 years, 23 of those as a head coach. I want to thank every player I’ve been able to coach during my career.”
Hibbs was the head coach from Wellington from 1996 to 2010. After a three year stint at Shawnee Mission Northwest, he took the head coaching job at Winfield, where he has guided the Viking program for five years.
Hibbs, a Wellington High School graduate, returned home to become head coach for the Crusaders in 1996 immediately taking WHS to the state semifinals and losing to Ulysses. He would eventually finish second in Class 4A in 2000, losing to Fort Scott.
He would then coach Wellington to a state championship in 2001 and 2002 beating the same Fort Scott school. The Crusaders made several deep state playoff runs since under his reign. During his tenure, WHS held the longest consecutive playoff year streak dating back to 1992 until his Wellington retirement in 2010.
