Land Rush Rail to reopen rail service from Blackwell to Wellington in February
Sumner Newscow report – The Blackwell Industrial Authority in collaboration with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, announced that the railroad line formerly operated by the Blackwell Northern Gateway will soon reopen to service.
The 37-mile railroad track from Blackwell to Wellington has been closed since February 2024 following an emergency order from the Federal Railroad Administration.
In October 2023, the Blackwell Northern Gateway company was purchased by new owners. Shortly thereafter, the FRA issued Emergency Order 33, resulting in a temporary shutdown of the railroad due to safety concerns. Since then, the BIA and ODOT have been working diligently to find a reputable and experienced operator to resume operations safely.
The new operator will be Land Rush Rail, managed by Farmrail, an Oklahoma-based shortline railroad company with a long and proven track record of providing safe, reliable, and efficient service, according to a spokesperson for the Farmrail company.
The railroad tracks are owned by both the BIA and the ODOT. The BIA owns the section of track extending from the Kansas/Oklahoma border north to Wellington. ODOT owns the track extending from the border south to Blackwell.
As part of the restoration efforts, citizens can expect to see rail equipment being brought in to mitigate vegetation along the tracks. This work is a crucial part of getting the line ready for full operations, and we appreciate the community’s understanding and cooperation during this process.
Important Safety Notice:
Farmrail officials urge all citizens to exercise caution when near railroad tracks during this time. Please be mindful of the movements of rail operators and avoid any equipment being used to clear and repair the line as safety is the top priority.
