Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten are Big Cheese Athlete(s) of the Week
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Makenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten have been named Big Cheese Athlete(s) of the Week.
Adams/Aufdengarten are members of the 2016 Wellington High School girls tennis team and placed fifth this weekend in the Class 4A State Tennis Tournament in Winfield in doubles competition.
They had quite the run and played in front of a huge group of Crusader faithful. Adams/Aufdengarten defeated a duo from Abilene in the first round, before losing to a Smoky Valley team in the championship quarterfinals. The Crusader duo then came back on Saturday and defeated doubles teams from McPherson, Parsons and Collegiate to capture the fifth-place crown.
The last duel was especially exciting in that they defeated Cody/Geoffrey of Wichita Collegiate, a duo they lost to in the Class 4A Regional Championship in Pratt the week before.
Adams is a junior and Aufdengarten is a freshman. Both plan to be partners again next year.
