Memorial Day was a day of reflection at Prairie Lawn Cemetery
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Memorial Day is a day of reflection, of remembrance, and of renewed hope. And on a sunny Monday morning, Sumner County residents congregated at Prairie Lawn Cemetery remembering now only those who served in the military, but served us in everyday life.
For Landon Diedrich, pictured above with his girl friend, it was a time to get reacquainted with his dearly departed great-grandmother Joy Frantz, who died in 2004.
“This is the first time I’ve had enough strength to come out here and tell her how much I love her,” Diedrich said. “We had so many great conversations while I was growing up.”
Diedrich’s story is unlike others, as family members throughout Wellington and beyond came out to place flowers and other mementos on the graves of their departed loved ones.
The Wellington VFW held its annual service at Prairie Lawn. This year’s featured speaker was Colonel Roy Yenchesky. The service was highlighted by the placing of the wreaths by various service organizations of wars past, the salute of the Comrades by the VFW Firing Squad, and the playing of the taps by Melanie Dawson and Jeremy Burden.Â
This year there were 1,226 flags that flew at Prarie Lawn – a new record. Every year is a new record for the Avenue of Flags.
A reminder volunteers are needed taking down the flags at 4 p.m. today.  For more pictures visit the photo gallery of today’s Memorial Day events by clicking here.
