by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Five Wellington girls and Colin Reichenberger will advance to the 2014 Kansas State Track and Field Championships on May 30 and 31, after finishing in the top four of the Class 4A Regional in Clearwater Friday. The state track meet, usually held during Memorial Day weekend, will be held a week later due to the high school calendar shift.

Holly Wright also broke the 300 meter hurdles record with a 46.79 time, breaking Stasha McClure’s 1999 mark of 47.2 in 1999. The senior, along with Jaycee Schettler, will go into the state tournament as four-time state qualifiers on Friday.

Reichenberger for the sixth time this year broke the WHS school record in the 300-meter hurdles. This time he turned in a 39.28 time besting his 39.46 time at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV meet the week before. He bested Birch of Andover Central, who ran it in 40.02 for second place.

Reichenberger also placed first in the 110 meter hurdles with a 14.84 time eking out Birch who ran it in 14.91.

On the girls side, Holly Wright became a four-time state placer for the second consecutive year. She won the high jump regional contest with a 5’4” leap.

She also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a 46.79 time, behind Reichenberger of Andale (not that Reichenberger), who ran it in 45.82. Both the 4×100 meter relay and the 4×400 meter relay teams qualified for which Wright was running. The 400-meter relay team placed third with a 50.63 time and the 1600 meter relay team placed fourth with a 4:10.50.

Jaycee Schettler, a freshman, also placed in four events – as a member of the two relay teams. She finished fourth in the 100 meters with a 12.88 and fourth in the 200 with a 26.55.

Other members of the 400 meter relay team were Cajen Shore and Dietra Sober. Sober and Jaedyn Ledesma were members of the 4×400 meter relay team.

Shore also qualified in the triple jump finishing fourth with a 33-foot 9 3/4-inch leap.

Overall, Wellington girls finished sixth with 41 points. They were hampered by not having Leah Nelson or Avery Lewellen participate, who had family vacations next week and can’t attend the state track meet. According to team policy because of that they could not run in the regional track meet.
