School board fails to take action on proposal to reduce school year because of unused school days
Sumner Newscow report — During a special meeting on Monday, the Wellington school board failed to pass a resolution that would reduce the number of days in the school year because of unused snow days.
The last day of school for the staff will remain on May 22, as was originally scheduled, instead of the proposed May 19. The motion failed by a 3-3 vote, with one board member not in attendance. Those voting to dismiss the school year early were: Chris Buckman, Pat Zeka, and Brandon Earl. Those voting against it were: Tom Henning, Jason Newberry, and Deanna Garver. Andrea Kriefels did not attend Monday’s meeting.
The board discussed revising the 2022-23 school calendar by reducing the number of days for this school year. A couple of schools in the area have revised their school calendar for the 2022-23 year. They have done this by reducing the number of days than originally scheduled due to not using any snow days this year. If approved, some adjustments would need to be made with testing, end-of-the-year celebrations, and already scheduled activities.
Buckman motioned to move the last day of school for students to May 19 and the last day for staff to May 22. Pat Zeka seconded the motion.
