WHS BASEBALL

Milo Elder pitching against Winfield.

Game #1: Winfield 5 Wellington 1
Game #2 Wellington 11 Winfield 2

Recap: Wellington earned a split against Winfield and broke a five-game losing streak in game two. But it will be game one that could haunt the Crusaders.

Wellington expected a sweep against Winfield but lost 5-1 in game one. This marks the first win for Winfield in over two years. The Crusaders are 3-7 and are currently No. 16 in the 19-team Class 4A-West. The KSHSAA postseason has two 16-team regionals in Class 4A. The three teams at the bottom will have no postseason. Wellington still needs a few more wins to keep a team like Larned/LaCrosse leap-frogging it (see standings here ‘click on 4A’ on the page).

On Monday, Winfield broke up a scoreless game in the third inning using a Justyce Tate single and then taking advantage of an error to lead 2-0.

In the third, Winfield added a run; then in the fourth, the Vikings scored two more.

The Crusaders’ lone run came in the bottom of the fifth when Dusty Bannister singled James Redford home. Wellington would get no closer thereafter.

Winfield’s Austin Bryant pitched all seven innings, allowing just five hits, four walks, and striking out 10. Wellington had three pitchers who combined for six hits, five walks, and striking out seven. Milo Elder took the loss on the mound.

In game two, Wellington broke open a tight ball game in the bottom of the fifth with an eight-run inning to capture the split.

The Crusaders were leading 3-2 going into the bottom half of the fifth when Bannister ripped open an RBI double. Then Nick Giefer got a 2RBI single. Banks Hinshaw added a 2RBI double. James Redford finished things off with a 2RBI double.

The Crusader had 14 hits in the second contest to Winfield’s seven. Hinshaw was the winning pitcher allowing seven hits, allowing no walks, and striking out three.

Kyndal Rusk had a big, big game against Winfield Monday afternoon including scoring this game-winning run.

WELLINGTON SOFTBALL

Game #1 Wellington 5 Winfield 4
Game #2 Winfield 12 Wellington 9

The Crusader girls split with Winfield and are now 4-6 for the season, which puts them at No. 13 in the Class 4A-west (see standings here)

In the first game, Wellington won in dramatic fashion with a walk-off victory. Claire Ginter hit a ball to center field that was dropped in the bottom of the seventh with the game knotted at 4.

Kyndal Rusk, sitting at third, took off for home to secure the win.

Winfield opened the game with a run in the top of the first, but Wellington scored three in the bottom of the third on a 3-run homer by Rusk out of the left-field fence. Winfield came back with two runs in the top of the fourth.

Wellington responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth with another Rusk run. The Lady Dukes gave up a run in the top of the sixth, setting up the final inning.

This game was pretty evenly played. Wellington had nine hits to Winfield’s eight. Rusk was the star with three hits, three RBIs at four at bats.

Heidi Gulick was the winning pitcher. In seven innings, she allowed eight hits, walked four, and struck out nine.

Winfield scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 12-6 lead. Wellington answered when Haley Gulick singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs and Heidi Gulick doubling on a 3-2 count scoring two runs.

Wellington racked up 16 hits in the losing cause to Winfield’s 12. The big problem was errors. Wellington committed six of them.

OXFORD BASEBALL

Game #1 – Oxford 13 Cedar Vale Dexter 1
G#2 – Oxford 13 CVD 3.

Comments by Oxford head baseball coach Kyle Green are as follows:

“I felt like both games we came out mentally dialed in tonight. CVD is a much improved ball club from the last time we played them. They compete and do a nice job. Our kids did a great job of putting in play and didn’t commit any errors in game 1, which is a huge thing for us. Hayden Ruyle got the win in Game 1 to move to 4-1 on the year.

Connor Commerford got the win in Game 2 to move to 3-1 on the year. Johnny Elliott had a great double heard, going 1-2 in game 1, with a HR and 2RBI’s. He followed that up in game 2 by going 2-2 with a double, and a 3 run HR to go with 4 RBI’s. We move to 9-3 on the season and 6-3 in league play. Huge double header on Thursday as we travel to Sedan.”

Stats for the two games are as follows:

Oxford vs. CV-Dexter game #1

Oxford vs. CV-Dexter game #2
