Sub-state first round: Argonia, Caldwell boys are victorious in first round, South Haven ends season

Sumner Newscow report — The Class 1A sub-state post-season has begun, and both the Argonia and Caldwell boys came out victorious in their first round game. The South Haven boys lost and have been eliminated from post-season competition.

Argonia 62 Ashland 36

The Red Raiders, at 11-10, have moved on to the second round to be played on Saturday at 2 p.m. Argonia will travel to Minneola, which defeated Moscow 78-39 in the other first-round game.

Argonia got four scorers in double figures Monday night in its 26-point win. Jackson Kollmeyer led Argonia with 15 points. Maddez Hemberger had 14, Corben Koehler 13, and Carson Vineyard 11.  Other scorers were Zach Morrison with 7 and Trent Haines with 2.

Argonia opened with a 17-6 lead as Kollmeyer sunk four three-pointers in the first eight minutes. The Red Raiders led 29-17 at the half. Both teams were hot in the third with the Red Raiders outscoring Ashland 18-15. In the fourth, Argonia pulled away with a 14-4 output.

Both Argonia teams are still playing. The Argonia girls received a bye in the first round and will play the winner of tonight’s Deerfield vs. Minneola matchup.


Caldwell 49 Attica 27

The Caldwell boys, at 8-12, ended Attica’s season at home Monday night. The Bluejays will now travel to Cunningham on Saturday at 2 p.m. Cunningham, the No. 2 seed, received a first-round bye.

The game started slowly with both teams combining for 10 points, Caldwell leading 6-4. The Bluejays led 19-13 at the half. In the third quarter, Caldwell would open up the game with a 15-3 output en route to a 22-point victory.

Caldwell was led by Mak Blosser, who scored 23 points, going 9-of-19 from the field and 5-of-11 from the three-point arch. Interestingly, he never shot a free throw in the game. Other Caldwell scorers were: Caleb Boone 8, Jax Noyes 6, Tanner Clark 5, Colt Schmidt 5, and Richard Crumbliss 2. Attica was led by Xander Newberry with 8.

Crest 58 South Haven 29

South Haven ended its season at 2-20, losing to Crest at 17-5. No statistical information from this game was made available.
