Sumner County football preview: Important district contests ahead
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It is week #5 for Sumner County teams and we are already getting to that time when things start to “crunch.”
Hutchinson Trinity (2-2 Overall, 1-0 district) at Conway Springs (4-0, 1-0).
It is hard to see No. 1 ranked Conway Springs losing this game going into tonight’s contest. Hutchinson Trinity got past South Sumner in week #1.
South Sumner (2-2, 0-1) at Ellinwood (0-1, 3-1).
The KSHSAA did not do South Sumner any favors by putting them in this loaded district. Ellinwood was destroying opponents in the first three weeks: Syracuse 32-0, Herington 47-0, Stanton County 55-0. Then the district started, and Sterling ended its winning streak with a 41-35 victory. South Sumner, which lost a heartbreaker to Hutchinson Trinity, has to win here to get into the playoffs.
Wichita Trinity (3-1, 0-1) at Belle Plaine (0-4, 0-1)
Dragons have been outscored 168-0, and they are about to battle Class 3A Wichita Trinity. The Knights quarterback Zac Zimmerman leads the state in passing with 1,354 yards this season. This is a non-district game.
Oxford (3-1, 1-0) at Pratt-Skyline (2-2, 1-0)
Both teams are looking to go 2-0 in this game. These are not typical opponents. The two schools have never played one another on the gridiron. Kind of strange since you would think these similarly sized schools would have squared off at least once.
Fairfield (2-2, 0-1) at Argonia-Attica (3-1,1-0) (at Attica)
A&A are on a three-game winning streak and have righted the season quite well since that season opening loss to West Elk. This game is hard to figure. Fairfield got off to a good start with wins over Harford and Pratt Skyline but then fell to Reno County Homeschool and Hutchinson Central Christian.
