Sumner County Roundup: A&A and Oxford win big, South Sumner and Belle Plaine lose

Sumner Newscow report — A roundup of games involving Sumner County football teams on Friday night…

Argonia-Attica 58 Fairfield 12

On paper, going in, it looked to be closer. For a while, it was. A&A was up 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, having made a two-point conversion, and Fairfield did not.

But A&A took over. The Titans outscored Fairfield 24-6 in the second quarter. In the second half it was all A&A outscoring its opponent 26-0.

Sophomore Maddex Hemberger threw for 119 yards while going 4-of-5 passing for three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Rushing-wise, Carson Vineyard had 156 yards on 12 carries, leading the Titans by 256 total yards.

A&A is on a roll, having won four straight and, more importantly, 2-0 in the district standings.

Ellinwood 59 South Sumner 27

When it traveled to Ellinwood, South Sumner dropped to 0-2 in the district and 2-3 in 11-man football. The Eagles improved to 4-1. South Sumner needs to find a win against one of these three teams: Conway Springs, Sterling, or Medicine Lodge, if it hopes to make the playoffs.

Stats are unavailable at this time.

Oxford 54 Pratt-Skyline 8

The Wildcats made it 2-0 in the district and 4-1 overall with a win over Pratt-Skyline. The Thunderbirds actually got on the board first with less than a minute played. From that point forward, they never sniffed the end zone.

Oxford got on the board on a 70-yard touchdown run at 11:28 in the first. Going into the second, Logan Gaither blocked a punt that led to a touchdown to give the Cats a 16-8 lead. Quarterback Johnny Schoeder then scored from the 1, and the romp was on.

It was 38-8 at the half. The Cats would had three more touchdowns and everyone went home early. Oxford is now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in districts. They will host Kiowa County next Friday for homecoming.

Wichita Trinity 54 Belle Plaine 6

Dragons fall to 0-5. They did get a touchdown, though. The first of the season.
