Wellington experienced a couple of small fires, minor injuries from last night’s festivities

Sumner Newscow report — The Fourth of July went off with a bang. Unfortunately, it also caused a couple of small fires and three people were reported to have suffered minor injuries last night in Wellington.

Interim Fire Chief James Woydziak said two small fires that were contained to the grass and did not cause any kind of structural damage. Also, it was there were at least three firecrackers that blew up in a person’s hand including taking a trip to the emergency room.

Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath said the department took its usual share of complaints of people shooting off fireworks on the road and shooting past the designated legal shooting hours. He said the WPD had a couple of incidents where people were shooting off bottle rockets.

Overall, the Fourth of July went off pretty well, with no major incidents. The season of shooting fireworks is over within the city limits. Sumner County unincorporated area will allow shooting through July 6.
