Wellington falls to Andale 38-0

Wellington’s defense stymied the Andale on several drives. But the Indians were still able to score five different times.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — There is always something about Andale that can thwart any kind of momentum a Wellington football team may have in a season.

Yes, Wellington came into the game 3-0 and was vying for a league championship. But when the evening ended the Crusaders were once again staring at an overwhelming defeat and searching for answers. This time it was 38-0.

Wellington had no answers for the Indians, who out rushed the Crusaders 268 to 46 and would out pass them 71 to 26. For the night the Crusaders mustered just 72 yards of offense. In turn, Andale rolled with 339 yards for the night.

Andale established its dominance on the first drive. After almost breaking the opening kickoff, the Indians would score three plays later on a Sawyer Simon 30 yard run.

Wellington may have lost but the newly named “The Red Zone” student section was still having a good time.

To the Crusader defense credit, the Indians would never have an easier drive the rest of the game.

But Andale still managed to find the end zone on four more occasions.

On the other side of the ball, the Crusader offense was stymied. Wellington made just two first down and never got into enemy territory until very late when Aaron Schoemann blocked a punt. Still, the drive was stymied when quarterback Cade Phelps failed to get the recommended yardage on fourth down at the 3.

It was a homecoming reunion of sorts for Andale head coach Dylan Schmidt and assistant coach Tyler Ryan (above), who once headed up the Wellington program.

Wichita Collegiate comes to town next Friday. The Spartans were defeated by Mulvane 35-19 in what was deemed a bit of a surprise.
