World Series girls softball update

Update: Game time for the U16 Softball World Series game, Wellington vs. Plymouth, has been changed to 10:15 a.m., central on Wednesday. The winner will play in the finals at 1, and the “if necessary” game is set for 3:30 p.m.

by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls beat Jensen Beach (Fla.) Black 5-3 Tuesday to stay alive in the 16-under World Series Diamond Bracket. Through five innings, Wellington led 5-0, and had a no hitter going.

Jensen got two runs in the sixth. The Florida host had two on in the bottom of the seventh but Wellington held on to get the win.

Wellington will play Plymouth (New Hampshire) at 8 a.m. Wednesday as it continues play in the Diamond Bracket. Wellington lost to that team 5-4 Monday in the first round of the bracket after falling behind early.

It is single elimination now. If Wellington wins that game, it would play in the finals at noon. If the locals win there, they would play that same team again at 2:30 for the championship.

On Tuesday the team put its early tournament woes behind them and played like a team that could win a championship.

Wellington pounded out 11 hits, and through five innings Madison Lewellen was pitching a no-hitter. Jensen Beach got it figured out and put hits together in the sixth and managed three runs. They also had two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Wellington’s defense held on for the win.

In the top of the sixth, Wellington had the bases loaded with one out, but did not get another run. Wellington led 12 runners on base for the game.

Wellington got a run in the first, and added three more in the fourth before getting an insurance run in the sixth.

Lewellen had a strong game in the circle. She spread out three hits, struck out eight and walked four.

Baylee DeJarnett had a double with an RBI. Siarah Walker was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Emily Templeton and Erin Goodrum each had two hits. Jenna Rausch, Taylor Zimmerman, Lewellen all had hits.
