Wellington girls softball team make it 4-0 with sweep of Andale

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls softball team may be the biggest story of the spring season so far – going 4-0 against two impressive opponents: Mulvane and Andale.

On Monday, Wellington would beat Andale 6-0 and 6-5 at Worden Park.

The Crusaders controlled both contests up until the final two innings of game two, when Andale pulled off an improbable triple play in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Wellington leading 6-1, the Crusaders would get girls on second and third with no outs looking to put an end to the game with a run-rule. But Andale’s center fielder caught Shanlyn Hefley’s fly ball, who would then throw home to pick off Lexi Zavala at the plate. McKenna Oathout then got thrown out going to third.

That was the impetus to get Andale rolling. The Indians would respond with three runs in the top of the sixth. Wellington’s defense also got a run interference out when a low grounder to the shortstop that hit an Indian runner going to third.

Leading 6-4, Wellington’s defense held tough in the top of the seventh, and when center fielder Oathout caught a towering fly ball, the Crusaders had preserved the win and the sweep.

Wellington opened the game with a run in the first, and five runs in the second that included a Ryleigh Buck 2RBI home run. The Crusaders held a 6-1 lead until the sixth inning. For the game, Wellington had 11 hits and three errors. Kailey Jenkins was the winning pitcher. She also had four hits on the other side of the plate.

In the first game, Wellington would cruise to a 6-0 victory.

Wellington would open with 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first by Hefley. Jenkins and Savannah Cornejo both scored runs in the fourth inning, thanks to two consecutive hit pitches. In the bottom of the sixth, thanks to two sensational bunts by Carlie McComb and Oathout, Wellington padded its lead on a Jenkins double between the left and center field gap.

Hefley was the winning pitcher. Jenkins reached base three times in the game.

Wellington won’t play at Collegiate Thursday BECAUSE COLLEGIATE DOESN’T HAVE A SOFTBALL TEAM BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL OUT FOR SOCCER!

The Crusaders will host Winfield, Monday at Worden Park .
