Wellington golf team wins regional golf championship for 3rd straight year

Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington boys golf team has completed the hat trick – three straight regional titles.

Wellington won the Class 4A Regional in Ulysses Monday afternoon and will advance to the Class 4A state golf tournament in Winfield at Quail Ridge Golf Course on May 22-23.

The Crusaders shot a 339 for first place at the Bentwood Golf Course. Winfield placed second with a 351. The other team scores were: 3. Pratt 362, 4. Hugoton 389, 5. Clearwater 442, 6. Mulvane 442, 7. Ulysses 514.

Owen Farley was the regional second-best golfer Monday.

Wellington’s Owen Farley placed second with an 80. Derek Rausch finished tied for third with an 82. Ethan Brungardt placed sixth with an 84. Colten Clift tied for 12th, shooting a 93 to complete the team’s scores. Other Wellington golfers include Marcus Provost, who shot 115 for 31st place, and Easton Newberry, shooting 128 for 35th place. Full team and individual results are here.

Wellington boys golf coach James Ginter had this to say:

“It was a great day for the Wellington boys golf team. It’s hard to find the words to describe how proud I am of this young group of men. Our program has experienced enormous success recently, and this group was tasked with continuing that success, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. A fifth straight league championship and a third straight regional championship are amazing. This is just the beginning for this young group of men. The future is bright!”

The Crusaders will be competing against 11 other teams for the 36-hole Class 4A state championship next Monday and, hopefully, Tuesday. The teams will have 18 holes on day #1. Then the field will be cut in half for day #2.
