Wellington has had an outbreak of coyote sightings recently

Sumner Newscow report — The following is a press release issued by Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath:

———

“Over the past several weeks, Wellington Police has received several reports of coyote sightings in various residential neighborhoods around Wellington.  While WPD has no explanation for the increase in sightings, WPD offers the following advice:

  1. Never feed coyotes, feeding coyotes can create a safety concern for you and your neighbors.
  2. Keep a close eye on your pets (dogs/cats). Coyotes have been known to prey on domestic animals.
  3. Do not leave dog food/cat food outside unattended
  4. Keep your garbage in sealed containers.
  5. If you encounter a coyote on your property, maintain a safe distance and yell, clap your hands…to scare it away.

WPD has been in contact with the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks regarding the recent coyote sightings.  Additionally, Wellington Animal Control has placed a live animal trap along the 16th Street corridor and will continue to monitor.  Contact Wellington Police should you have any concerns with coyotes.
