Wellington High School opens season with JV tennis tournament in Maize South, Crusaders place second
Sumner Newscow report — The Wellington high school tennis team began its season at Maize South on Thursday and had some great results.
The high school tennis team began their season at Maize South on Thursday and had some great results.
“We were pleasantly surprised with how the girls performed,” said Brian Aufdengarten, Wellington head tennis coach. “Wellington finished in second place overall, losing only by one point to Maize.”

Leading the way were freshman Jo Avina at No. 2 singles, going 3-0 and giving up only one game all day, beating Eisenhower 6-0, MS Black 6-1, and winning the championship over Maize 6-0.
No. 2 Doubles team of Emma Norris and Tegan Buck went 3-0 also. In their first match, they came back from down 5-1 to win 6-5 over MS Gold. They then beat Eisenhower 6-4 and beat Maize in the championship 6-3.
No. 1 Singles Laney Meeker went 1-2 on the day and placed fourth overall in a strong field. No. 1 doubles of Gabi Angleton and Scarlett Smith also finished fourth, going 1-2 on the day in a strong field.
Wellington will be in action next Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Wellington for varsity.
