Wellington looks to go 3-0; most other Sumner County teams are favored this weekend

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — OK, last week, we reported that Wellington had a possibility of being 2-0 for the first time since 2009. With that accomplished, the next question is when was the last time Wellington was 3-0?

That would be 2007. Wellington opened up with a 33-23 win over Clearwater, and then knocked out Buhler and Circle.

The Crusaders have a chance of doing it again when Wellington travels to Augusta in what is considered a winnable game.

But let’s remember. Augusta won the last time these two met. The 2012 game is something anyone wearing Crusader red wishes to forget. Augusta came in here and won 14-6 breaking a huge losing streak for that Oriole team. So many things went wrong in the game for the Crusaders. It was a snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory moment.

Things are different this year. Wellington is rocking at 2-0. Two weeks ago it had a near record breaking passing performance against Goddard. Last week, Wellington ran the ball down the throats of Concordia. Wellington has a taste of victory in its saliva. It’s a sweet taste indeed.

WELLINGTON AT AUGUSTA:

Wellington (2-0), Augusta (1-1). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Follow the game: Twitter: Cueballnewscow. Radio: Adrian Young, play-by-play, KLEY-AM 1130. Television: Sumner Cable TV, Channel 5 (audio). Photos and recaps: Wellington.cc and Sumner Newscow.

Game night weather: It could possibly be a perfect night for football. Temperatures are in the 70s and may dip into the mid 60s before the game’s completion. No excuses, Wellington fans to not make a trip up there to watch your 2-0 Dukes.

The Topeka Capital-Journal computerized picks: Wellington. Hope that isn’t bad news, because Wellington has been the underdog the past two weeks.

Series history: Series record is not available. In the past decade, Wellington and Augusta have not seen a lot of one another except in 2004 and 2005 when they played twice. Wellington won both games in 2004 eliminating Augusta from the playoffs with a 14-12 win. However, Augusta returned the favor in 2005 with a 27-7 victory in the first round. In the 1990s, the two schools met on a yearly basis as members of the Chisholm Trail League Div. 1. Wellington usually got the best of the Orioles in those years.

What to expect from the opponent: Augusta got off to a good start with a 33-20 win over Circle. But a week ago it was squashed by Mulvane 39-7. The Wildcats ran for 322 yards rushing and 72 yards passing on the Orioles. Augusta was held to 96 yards rushing and 122 passing.

The game wasn’t a slaughter for a half, though, as Augusta trailed 14-0 after one half.

2013 season thus far:

Wellington:

Sept. 6 Goddard Wellington wins 34-28.
Sept. 13 Concordia Wellington wins 27-6.
Sept. 20 Augusta away
Sept. 27 Collegiate home
Oct. 4 Circle home
Oct. 11 Andale away
Oct. 18 Clearwater away
Oct. 25 Mulvane home
Oct. 31 Winfield away

Augusta:

Sept. 6 – Augusta 33 Circle 20

Sept. 13 – Mulvane 39 Augusta 7

Game’s significance: It’s league time and Wellington wants to get off on the right foot in this Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV affair. Also, 3-0 is a great feeling.

Injury situation: Running back Jaden Hines should be back. No other significant injuries. The junior varsity suffered a huge loss when Cameron Bartelson left the game on Monday with a concussion. He is out for the year and maybe his career. His parents report he is making a good recovery since that game and is back in school.

Other Sumner County games:

ARGONIA-ATTICA AT NORWICH (CJ COMPUTER pick: Argonia)

The Titans are enjoying the fruits of victory with their new team. Last week they beat Cedar Vale/Dexter 44-14 in a game that features four schools.

The team rolled to a 16-8 first quarter lead and held a 38-8 advantage at the half.

This week, A&A plays Norwich which will be seeing its third consecutive Sumner County team opponent. Last week it lost 60-50 to Oxford to fall to 0-2.

CALDWELL AT CUNNINGHAM (CJ COMPUTER pick: Caldwell)

Caldwell will be traveling to Cunningham eager to put last week’s bruising 14-6 loss to Udall away. The Bluejays are 1-1. Cunningham is looking for its first victory.

SOUTH HAVEN AT CEDAR VALE-DEXTER (CJ COMPUTER pick: South Haven)

Last we checked South Haven is still scoring points after that 72-48 marathon with South Barber. The Cardinals are traveling to the same place Argonia-Attica got its first victory ever. The Cardinals should win this one in easy fashion.

OXFORD AT FLINTHILLS (CJ COMPUTER pick: Oxford)

The Wildcats are 1-1 and playing a team that features a hybrid spread offense and no huddle. Hasn’t worked so far as Flinthills is 0-2.

WICHITA INDEPENDENT AT CONWAY SPRINGS (CJ COMPUTER pick: Conway Springs) It’s homecoming weekend in Conway Springs, and the only question surrounding this event is who will be crowned king and queen.

Look for a Cardinal romp. Independent is 1-1, just losing to Cheney last weekend.

GARDEN PLAIN AT BELLE PLAINE (CJ COMPUTER pick: Garden Plain)

Garden Plain has not exactly set the world on fire yet, beating Douglass and Chaparral by the exact 28-14 score.

Belle Plaine, though, is still looking for its first point. Cheney and Wichita Trinity outscored the Dragons by a combined 102-0 score in the first two weeks.
